● “Scathing and bitter criticism” was levelled at Derbyshire County Council after bosses announced Ashbourne’s controversial one-way traffic system would be kept for another 12 months. The authority said it had seen a reduction in accidents under the new scheme, and promised it would not affect the town’s chances of securing a much sought-after bypass to relieve the burden of traffic.

● A 27-year-old sidecar passenger was killed when his machine failed to negotiate a hairpin bend at Darley Moor Race circuit and crashed into the barrier. The rider survived.
