Fewer about, possibly a result of a falling trade but things distinctly more upbeat with an average back above 170p. Top price going to James Mellor, Monyash at over

£92 per head and top price per kilo at 193p.

178 Cull sheep Av £55.96 per head Trade competitiv­e for all bar the plainest sorts. Best continenta­l ewes to £139. Angus,’ £1,003 for Holsteins ant Limousins to £986.85. A 7-year-old 1005kg Limousin bull from W E Turnock & Sons sold well for 148p/kg to gross £1,487.40.

Overage steers from K J White & Co, Swinscoe sold to 165p/kg for a 700kg Hereford, 159p/kg for a 705kg; Angus and 155p/kg for a 775kg Hereford. Top headage price of £1204.25.

CLEAN CATTLE (13)

A good trade for clean cattle today with heifers topping at 200p/ kg for a 635kg Charolais from Rushton Spencer with two other Charolais heifers at 190p/kg for 545kg and 530kg heifers from the same vendor. Others realised 184p/kg for a 540kg Blonde from Reg Critchlow, Grindon and a 605kg Hereford at 180p/kg from GW & SM Pattinson, Weaver. A 670kg Simmental young bull sold to 184p/kg. Steers sold up to 186p/kg for a 420kg Limousin from GW &SM Pattinson with others to 181p/kg for a

635kg British Blue from PJ &J Tomlinson, Burton. Top headage price of £1270 for Charolais heifers, with others to £1,089 & £1,083.60. Bulls sold to £1,232.80 and steers to £1,149.35.

DAIRIES (26)

A very brisk trade saw a top price of £1,800 for a lovely Red and White second calver from regular vendors Edward and Diane Bennett. British Friesians were again keenly sort after, peaking at £1,680 for a 25kg heifer from Messrs Hudson of Longnor. 120.73p/kg or £98.66/head Bacon Pigs (41) av 117.51p/kg or £108.31/head; Heavy Pigs (4) av 109.52p/kg or £121.85/head

LAMBS (876)

A seasonal entry which included fewer of the better sorts which left many buyers frustrated. Trade was solid, although prices reduced in line with national trends. Best sorts saw spirited bidding to 196p/kg and five different vendors seeing lambs exceed 190p/kg. Well finished sorts generally 180p and better. Overall average of 166p/kg.

CULL SHEEP (237)

A fair entry sold on a very fast trade. Best Texel’s to £132 from Brad Hunter of Quarnford with others at £130 and £122. Better mules £60-£84 and best Suffolks up to £100 per head. Overall average £50.30 including a good number of hill sheep.

CALVES (106)

Very, very quiet with half as many as last week. Some native heifers looking best sold.

Generally fairly similar trade and average to last week. A tremendous Limousin topped the day at £370 from Mark Hodgkinson, Earl Sterndale. 14 best sorts over £270, mediums £180 - £250 with a few smaller sorts under £170; 17 Blues av £223 to £322 - W E Turnock & Sons; 6 Sims av £270 to £328 - J Gould & Son; 10 Lims av £201 to £370 - H Hodgkinson & Sons; 1 Blonde to £300 - P I R Sales

Friesians from K W Twemlow sold at £150, £105 and £92. Geoff Millington had £130 for his Holstein and a Monty at £100. A handful of processing bulls generally £30-£50.
