Jackson hits six as Under-16s get off to a flyer in first home match

-

ASHBOURNE Aztecs Under-16s started their home campaign with a fine 8-1 win over Sandiacre Town Youth.

They opened the scoring within five minutes when a defensive error led to Tyler Jackson coolly slotting the ball home.

The second goal came from a corner and it was Jackson again, volleying into the net after controlling the ball with his head.

Josh Wheeldon was attacking strongly when he was fouled in the box and the referee awarded a penalty, which James Donlan converted.

Sandiacre battled back but several efforts were saved by goalkeeper Jack Banks.

Just before half-time, Jackson completed his hat-trick.

Aztecs made several second-half changes to keep players fresh, with Tyler Burton, Jack Green and Adam Leigh all having a spell on the bench, making way for Thomas Barke, Jacob Wibberley-howe and Harry Vinall.

The pattern remained the same and a fifth goal came as the result of a move from the back.

Jayden Clamp put a long ball through to Jackson, who sidestepped the keeper for this fourth goal.

Alex Cheetham got number from Burton’s corner.

Sandiacre did pull a goal back but Jackson added two more to his tally to make it a double hat-trick for the jubilant Aztecs. six

AZTECS Under-14s went down 3-2 away to Lakeside, of Rugeley, who scored a stoppage-time winner.

After a quiet opening, chances started to flow and Freddie Murphy and Max Morrison went close for Aztecs, while Fraser Cooper made some smart saves to deny Lakeside in a goalless first half.

Almost immediately after the restart, Murphy latched on to a superb through ball from Toby Carolan and finished neatly.

Murphy went close again but Dan Burton had to work hard to shield the defence.

Lakeside equalised somewhat fortunately when a shot came back off the bar and was prodded home after a scramble.

Soon after, Lakeside broke well to take a 2-1 lead but Aztecs hit straight back, with a smart lob from Carolan when he spotted the keeper off his line.

Both sides had chances to win it but it was looking like a point each until Lakeside’s winner deep in stoppage time.

ASHBOURNE Aztecs Pumas Under10s were narrowly on the wrong side of the scoreline in their non-competitive game against AFC Spondon Crusaders Thunder.

In a good end-to-end game, Aztecs keeper Luca Montgomery made some fine saves and distributed the ball well.

Aidan Brown kept the defence in good order and pushed the ball forward at every opportunity.

Joseph Reeks played in a few different positions, while Frazer Else proved another good addition to the team, a solid defender who can get forward.

Finley Wood hit the woodwork a couple of times and scored from a penalty after Reeks was pushed. UNDER-10S: Luca Montgomery, Aidan Brown, Harry Lovatt, Ben Stubbs, Jack Tinker, Finley Wood, Frazer Else, Joseph Reeks. ASHBOURNE Rugby Club could not follow up their opening day victory as they went down 16-8 away to promoted Ashby in Midlands Two East (North) on Saturday, following on from their win at Southwell on the opening day.

Now Ashbourne have their first home game of the season to look forward to, with the visit of Dronfield on Saturday. SPORTS coach Ray Massey is aiming to launch an indoor athletics club for children up to 15 years of age in Ashbourne.

It will be called Ashbourne Sportshall Club and will meet for the first time on Monday, September 24, at the town’s leisure centre (4.30-6pm), and weekly thereafter.

Sportshall athletics is regarded as a good introduction to the sport for young people and Massey hopes some of those who take part can qualify for the Derbyshire sportshall team to compete in the Midlands Championships in February.
