Surprised by gaming gripes

-

THE number of complaints made about the plans for an adult gaming centre in Union Street surprises me.

While I accept the ethical argument about an outlet that could fuel addiction being a bad thing, could the same not be said for the new Co-op in Blenheim Road?

I’ve not been in yet but I’ve no doubt it sells alcohol, cigarettes and a few other items some people find addictive. Scratchcards, for example.

Was there a similar representation made when new off licenses were applied for? Or the recent influx of new pubs and bars?

I genuinely sympathise with anyone whose life has been affected by a gambling addiction, but if someone wants to play on a fruit machine there are already plenty of places in town to do that. This is nothing new, and standing in its way won’t solve anything.

As for the other complaints about potential noise, an inappropriate location and the possibility of antisocial behaviour, I wonder how many people have objected on these grounds that don’t live nearby?

I’m actually at two minds. I’m not sure any sort of gambling outlet, be it a bookmakers or an amusement arcade, is right for Ashbourne. I think it cheapens the town. But, as always, the proof of the pudding will be in the eating.

If there is a demand for an adult gaming centre then it will survive and I suppose that’s fair enough. If there isn’t a demand and it doesn’t pay its bills, it won’t be around for long. And then the problem’s solved anyway.
