Care home staff on high after Snowdon climb

-

STAFF at a Uttoxeter care home staff conquered Mount Snowdon to raise money for families living with dementia.

Barrowhill Hall employees climbed the 1,000m Welsh mountain in two and a half hours and have so far raised £315 for the Alzheimer’s Society. Val Barnes, who reached the summit with colleagues Becky Dalton, Amy Farrell and Becky Buckley, said it was “a fantastic if exhausting day”.

She said: “We weren’t sure if we’d be able to do it but we’re thrilled that we got to the top.

“We’re so passionate about the work that we do and we wanted to show that by completing this challenge.”

Part of Barrowhill’s work involves children from nearby Abbotsholme School making weekly visits to chat to and play with residents. Joining the Barrowhill team were Abbotsholme teachers Ann Parker and Michele Millward. Ann said: “Our little ones have gained a great deal of understanding about dementia and so have we.

“We were very keen to support Barrowhill’s fundraising and the support they show for families living with dementia.”

There are an estimated 850,000 people in the UK who live with dementia. That is set to soar to over a million by 2025.

The issue has been highlighted by people in the public eye who have the illness, including actors Barbara Windsor, and Prunella Scales.
