Boost for mums in baby unit

WE are all aware how difficult life is with a new baby.

Suddenly you are looking after a tiny, helpless, human being who can do nothing for itself - and you’re probably exhausted. It really is a ‘big ask.’

And what about if you’re not having an easy time of it in terms of your own mental health either?

So, as Brailsford WI always want to support local charities and good causes, and this is an issue close to a few of our members’ hearts, we decided to do something to help these young mums and their newborns.

We started some serious fund-raising. In May, we held a popular fashion show at the village hall which raised enough to spend £500 on items that would help the mother and baby unit at Derby Hospital.

It looks after mothers and babies who have mental health problems after giving birth, and does a fantastic job for the community.

Many mums find themselves in the unit without the basic toiletries and comforts.

So, we bought a load of useful items and recently presented the unit with nightdresses, slippers, two DVD player/radios, and many other items, including two planters for their garden play area and a voucher to buy bulbs in the spring.

The photograph shows president Pam Stanley and treasurer Caroline Pink visiting the unit with the goodies on October 3 and presenting them to two of the senior nurses in charge of the unit.

We do hope it will make a little difference.
