Bakewell market

-

DECENT entries but not as many store cattle as last week resulted in total of 775 cattle and 1,684 sheep. Concerns about cost and availability of feed and bedding are starting to show.

Trade for the stronger short-keep cattle was outstanding, with

Steers to £1,235, Hfrs £1,230 and Feeding Bulls £900. There were, however, quite a number of small cattle many rather old for their size which had clearly suffered from the hard winter and dry summer. These found a ready market but at lower prices.

OTM and feeding cow number were up at 145 with farmers clearly dispersing with any passengers before winter arrives. Increased numbers and plainer sorts contributed to a lower overall average at 98.6 pence. Finished cattle numbers were usefully up at 124 with decent top figures of 248p and £1,527 average did look a shade easier. 80 Calves this week with Bulls to £400 and Heifers £325.

There 1,105 Lambs on offer and sign of improved demand. The best on offer to 200p and £87.98, but the SQQ average was not exciting reading at 158.8p A substantial turnout of 564 Cull Sheep sold on a better trade with Ewes to £132 and the overall average £61.84.

145 OTM, BARREN & FEEDING COWS – OVERALL AVE 98.6P

A tremendous entry of 145 cows, with all other places packed. All the regulars were operating but with a price very much in mind. Top call was 156p for a Limousin Cow from Nigel Birch. Better sorts 130p plus with buyers taking a chance on trade improving in the forthcoming weeks.

82 BLACK & WHITE AND EX DAIRY COWS - AVE 90.1P

Good cows still look well sold with a top call of 126p for a fed Friesian from Shirt Farms. Better sorts generally over 110p, better Holstein 100-110p with plainer cows 85-95p and lean cows under 80p.

564 EWES AND CULL RAMS

A bigger entry with trade for the big well shaped continentals looking good, the best Suffolk’s good but the Mules and plain types hard to move.

Some very good pens of Texel’s sold well to a top of £132 for Jackie Trueman and £126 for Andrew & Jill Gagie.

The best of the Texel’s £96 to £132 with the top 6 pens averaging over £110. Suffolk’sto £111 and £102 per head for the very best.

A few Mules in the £60 region but unfortunately, a large proportion forward lacked flesh, with some very plain.

Best Texel Tups £90 and above to a top of £127 for Harry Young.
