It’s another frustrating away day as Ashbourne are beaten

ASHBOURNE Rugby Club came back frutsrated from their game at Long Eaton with a 29-15 defeat.

This was only promoted Long Eaton’s second Midlands Two East (North) win of the season but they have already turned Ashbourne over twice, having won in the cup at the Rec last month.

“It was quite a frustrating game,” said captain Ollie Ruddock.

“We had made about seven changes to the side that played Lincoln last week because of injuries and unavailabilities and I think that showed.

“Everyone who came in played well but we had so much territory and possession in the first half and the only time they entered our half was a breakaway which led to a try.

“All our first-half pressure only resulted in one try and I think that’s because we were very one-dimensional.

“Long Eaton soaked it up well with good defence.

“In the second half, we scored first to go 10-7 up but every time we scored, they replied immediately.”

Ashbourne’s tries came from Jack Bowers, Jonny Riley and Mark Broom.

The result leaves Ashbourne with three wins and three defeats in the division but the way it is shaping up, they still have a good chance of challenging towards the top if they can put their best game together consistently.

Only Melbourne, with six wins from six, look like dominating, although they have won most of their games by relatively narrow margins.

Second-placed Matlock are only seven points ahead of Ashbourne, who are at home to Loughborough, one point ahead of them, on Saturday.
