Local rockers Primal in with chance of a national prize
A PAIR of Ashbourne musicians are in with a chance of winning a major prize after their band was shortlisted in a national competition.
Daniel Bigland and Rory Wilson are members of Primal, a rock band which has caught the eye of judges in the Firestone Road to the Main Stage competition.
The nationwide talent search studied 600 bands and Primal, which has only been formed as a band since last August, has reached the final stage and is one of just six bands in for the top prize.
If Primal receives enough votes, the trio could now go on to win £25,000 of music equipment, the use of a van for a year, studio time and gigs on main stages across the UK.
Daniel said: “We have only been as a three-piece band for a year and have already performed over 30 shows across the UK.
“We have released two EPS with a third on the way, we have been featured and interviewed by Dean Jackson for BBC Introducing and recently performed as main support for the Grammy Award-winning artist “Fantastic Negrito” prior to his Jools Holland appearance.
“Our drummer Greg saw an ad for this competition on Instagram and this would be such a big break for us in our music journey.”
Former QEGS pupils Daniel and Rory met during their time at the Green Road school 15 years ago, and met their drummer, Greg later on.
The lads, who are now based in Nottingham, have all been in different bands such as wedding and metal bands and their clash of styles has proven popular with their audiences.
Daniel said: “It’s a real eclectic mix of different genres, all coming together.
“We were initially just hanging out, planning, playing and making ideas, but people seem to like what we’re doing, and we’ve received some amazing support.
“It’s been pretty crazy this last year, all built up out of nowhere.
“We all like going to gigs as well, and tend to check out whatever Nottingham’s got to offer, which is a bit of everything.
“Bigger bands tend to stop by Rock City while touring the UK, so there’s been a lot of time spent there.”
Votes for the competition, which closes on Sunday, November 11, can be placed by visiting firestone.roadtothemainstage.co.uk/meet-thebands where each band, including Primal, is listed with short descriptions.
