Panto serves up sugary treats and wicked witch
DETAILS of this year’s festive pantomime at Derby Theatre have been announced.
Rehearsals are under way for the family-friendly production of Hansel & Gretel, which is described as a magical show with lashings of live music performed by a band of actormusicians.
The show will run from Friday, November 30 until Saturday, January 5 and tickets are on sale now.
Playing the title characters will be Craig Anderson (as Hansel) and Yana Penrose (as Gretel).
New to Derby audiences, Craig’s previous credits include Macbeth at Centrepoint Theatre; Cinderella at Hazlitt Theatre and productions of Jack and the Beanstalk at Gatehouse Theatre, Stafford and Theatre Clwyd.
Yana’s credits include Phoenix and Turtle at the Little Angel Theatre and A Christmas Carol and Jack for Derby Theatre.
Joining them will be a host of familiar faces including Chris Price, playing the iconic role of the witch. Chris has appeared in a number of productions at the Theatre before including The Odyssey, A Christmas Carol and Cinderella, and his other recent credits include Jim Cartwright’s TWO at Gala Theatre and Scrooge at Pitlochry Festival Theatre.
Chris also played The Riddler in the international tour of Batman Live.
Also familiar to Derby audiences will be Esme Sears (Peter Pan, Cinderella and A Christmas Carol); Jack Quarton (Peter Pan, Great Expectations and Alice in Wonderland) and Liz Eaves (Peter Pan and Alice in Wonderland).
Joining the adult cast will be 18 talented young actors from the region – including Ariana Botchway, George Thompson, Rosie Austins, Millie Denney, Jaiya Dhillon, Harry Tallis, Leo Fox-white, Lottie Stone, Madison Naylor, Scarlett Allitt, William Brown, Amelie Turner, Maisie Gore, Freddie Phillips, Thomas Moore, Roxy Wright, Primrose Cole and Freya Youngman.
The creative team is Sarah Brigham; Mike Kenny; Neil Irish; Ivan Stott; Tim Heywood and Emma Jones.
A spokesman for the theatre said: “Follow our trail of breadcrumbs into the woods this Christmas for a deliciously festive treat, perfect for ages seven and above, and their families and friends.
“Hansel and Gretel need to get back home in a hurry, but in the enchanted woods there’s a cottage made entirely of sugary sweets and gorgeous gingerbread – not to mention a wicked witch to contend with.
“Can Gretel save the day and rescue her brother? And can Hansel leave the lollipops alone and actually help?
“Derby Theatre’s Christmas production team bring another magical and enchanting tale to the stage.
With lashings of live music, heaps of colourful costumes and a super scrumptious talented team of actor-musicians, Hansel & Gretel cooks up a magical, mouth-watering show.”

Dave Pegg and AJ Clarke will be appearing as part of the village’s concert series on Friday, November 29 from 8pm and tickets are on sale now.
Bassist Dave Pegg and singer Anthony John “AJ” Clarke met nearly two decades ago and regularly tour as a duo, offering a musical evening with a comic twist.
Alstonefield Events organiser Martin Snodin said: “Dave Pegg is best known as the longest-serving member of the pre-eminent folk rock band Fairport Convention and he’s been the bassist for a number of important folk and rock groups, including Jethro Tull.
“As well as being a highly distinctive bass player, he’s also a multi-instrumentalist and record producer.
“He’s played on a huge number of albums for other performers including Ralph Mctell, John Martyn, Nick Drake, Sandy Denny and Richard Thompson.
“AJ Clarke is an engaging, very humorous and gifted singer and composer who first became known for his songs about Ireland. He has toured with Fairport Convention and has been a regular MC of their annual festival at Cropredy, which Dave Pegg has organised for many years.
“Expect great tunes, great songs, great gags and surprises galore.
“The guys strongly recommend you bring all your medication!”
