AFC’S week of highs and lows

Ashbourne News Telegraph - - CELEBRITY WELLBEING -

ASHBOURNE FC’S mixed week saw them produce their best and worst performances of the season in the space of four days, according to manager Adam Lomas.

They went through in the Leek Cup in midweek, winning 3-2 at home to high-flying Foley Meir.

But Saturday’s 2-0 home defeat to Brereton Social in the Staffordshire County Senior League Premier Division brought them back to earth.

“From start to finish against Foley, we were impeccable in everything we did,” said Lomas.

“Our first goal came from a George Taylor run which resulted in the Foley centre-half turning the ball into his own net.

“That brought us level and despite going behind again, we never stopped.

“We got our just reward from Rob Austin, who smashed home the equaliser in the six-yard box after a scuffle from a corner.

“We then felt we could go on to win the game – and we did.

“Craig Startin picked the ball up from 25 yards out, danced past three Foley defenders and rounded the keeper to slot home.

“It’s such a hard task to play at this level when the majority of clubs have financial backing and players are paid to play.

“My lads turn up, give their all and we compete alongside the best on a regular basis.”

It was different on Saturday, as little went right against Brereton, a side they had not played before, who started the game below them in the table, albeit with three games in hand.

“After the performance of the season on Wednesday night, we then produced the worst performance of the season,” said Lomas.

“From start to finish, we never got going and everyone was hugely disappointed in their own performances coming off the pitch.

“You can’t win them all, I suppose. “That would have been a nice game for us to win to climb the table but we’ve got to forget about that now and move on.”

AFC were due in action again last night, in the second round of the Derbyshire Senior Cup, away to Clay Cross Town and are back in league action again on Saturday away to Wolstanton United.
