NUMBERS down a bit at 639 Cattle and 1,734 Sheep, but trade somewhat sharper in most department­s.

There were 388 Store and Breeding Cattle with fresh buyers and another tremendous trade. Steers to £1,115, Heifers £1,195 and Feeding Bulls £775. Cow and Calf outfits peaked at £1,510. Fewer finished cattle – 84 – and demand a fraction better; the best to 240p and £1,675 with the average for the 44 Heifers at 187.5p better than last week.

In the OTM and Feeding Cow section 94 Cattle sold to top figures of 162p and £1,399 to average 103.3p, an improvemen­t. 69 Calves with Bulls £398 and Heifers £228.

There were 1,016 finished lambs and hoggs. Top figures 210p and £94.56 and the SQQ average 173.2p up about 4p on the week. A large entry of 716 Cull Sheep with Ewes to £110 and the average £53.23 about the same as last week, but there were more plainer Ewes.

98 OTM, BARREN & FEEDING COWS – OVERALL AVE 103.3P

Fewer on offer, is the rush of Cows coming to an end? Hopefully the price will now start to improve. Best Cows topped at 162p twice for pure Blonds from Chris Shenton, of Wilmslow, to gross £1,399 and £1346.

Best red Limousins to 150p for Messrs Pearce, Hartington and 148p (£1346) for Anthony

Smith, Dalbury Lees.

53 BLACK & WHITE AND EX DAIRY COWS - AVE 89.1P

Very similar trade with very few best sorts on offer. Topping at 121p was John Minshull, of

Tean, with good fleshed Cows generally over 110p, leaner Cows 90-105p with plain models under 80p.

A similar number of Calves but again more buyers around the ring and the best quarter of the entry a strong trade. Numerous Blue Bulls over £280 and a top call of £398 for the Seals family at Shirland Lodge whose entry

of Bulls on the day averaged a superb £381.33. Messrs Potter at Bonsall were up with the top goods at £328 again with a Blue Bull.

A wide array of customers for the Continenta­l Heifers and Native Heifers with Blue Heifers to

£228 and Herefords and Limousins towards £180 per head. The best square Friesian Bulls between £82 and £110 but processing Calves harder to place. Nine reared Blue Steers and Hfrs to a top of £270 with others at

£264 and £244

716 EWES AND CULL RAMS

In the Cull Sheep increased numbers saw all types well bid for with best Texel Ewes to £110,

Char to £107 and the top 10 pens averaging £98. Best Mules saw more demand with these in the £58-£65 range with plainer Mules £45-£56 and best Horned Ewes up to the £50 mark.

Two Store Rams on offer saw Beltex x Char Lambs to £140 and Shearlings to £125.
