Bakewell market

-

Numbers up with 758 cattle and 1,714 sheep on offer as farmers look to sell before the predicted change in the weather.

Most sections reported improved prices except OTM.

The entry of 469 store and breeding cattle was boosted with several lots previously destined for a Friday sale.

Steers sold to £1,195, heifers to £1,090 and feeding bulls £665.

In the breeding section in-calf beef heifers from JW & RG Ede topped at £1,400, cow and calf outfits sold to £1,200 with stock bulls to £1,420.

There were 99 finished cattle forward with trade a shade better, the best on offer to 256p and £1,510, 38 heifers averaged 193.5p.

In the OTM and feeding cow section, trade was not as brisk, top figures 150p and £1,108 and the average down at 88.9p.

Eight-five calves on offer with keen competition for the better end, bulls to £420 and heifers £230.

Turning to the sheep the 1,004 lambs were better sold with top figures of 217p and £105.53 per head. The SQQ looked a bit more cheery at 175.5p.

Finally, there were 710 cull sheep with ewes to £104 and the average £50.42 for an entry which included a good many representatives from the moors.

With more people than usual in the market it was good day to send the buckets round for Children in Need.

It is pleasing to report that even with agricultural prospects looking uncertain farmers and buyers dug deep and donated £625 which auctioneers Bagshaws pledged to match. The result – a cheque for £1,250 will be heading to Children in Need.

105 OTM, BARREN & FEEDING COWS – OVERALL AVE 88.9P

Similar numbers but trade was hard work with abattoirs full of cows and demand low led to reduced averages. Heifers peaked at 150p (31mths) for a Simmental from J Woolley & Sons with cows up to 148p and 141p for Messrs Harrison, Priestcliffe.

45 black and white and ex-dairy cows, average 77.5p.

Best meat sold to 118p (£968) for a good Holstein (7yrs). Better cows generally over £1 with some big Holsteins 90-100p, plainer Holsteins 75-85p with lean cows under 70p.
