Duchess inspires exhibition that will celebrate man’s best friend...
CHATSWORTH is serving up an event to celebrate man’s best friend as the stately home opens its doors to doggies in 2019 for “Chatswoof”.
The visitor attraction will be hosting an exhibition when it opens for the new season from March 23, with The Dog: A Celebration at Chatsworth.
The dog-friendly exhibit is set to feature everything canine - from working dogs, woven dogs, dogs on canvas and dogs on camera, to puppets and popular culture.
Alex Hodby, curator of exhibitions and engagement said: “We will be delving deep into the Devonshire Collection to share stories, and capture the idiosyncratic, faithful, endearing and playful character of man’s best friend.
“The original idea for the exhibition was conceived by the Duchess of Devonshire, who combines a love of dogs with a great interest in collecting modern and contemporary works of art and commissioning portraits of family dogs.”
The Duchess of Devonshire trains her own dogs for obedience and field trials, and also explores the history of the dog in different art forms such as paintings, drawings, sculpture, letters, photographs and contemporary art all on display in the house.
Selected loans from public and private collections will also be shown alongside the Devonshire Collection.
The stately home is also looking to become even more dog friendly over the coming months, as dogs on leads can already explore the grounds and are also welcome inside the shops and the Carriage House restaurant.
The Dog: A Celebration at Chatsworth will take place between March 23 and October 6, 2019.
