● Four and-a-half years after the collapse of the dam wall at Carsington, and 15 years after the first pulic inquiry investigating the need for Carsington Reservoir, Severn Trent Water Authority accepted a £17.7 million tender for the construction of a new dam wall. This meant the work to complete the reservoir could finally get underway and it was predicted it could be operational by 1993.
● More than 4,000 library users objected to plans to privatise the county’s service. Opponents feared it could make borrowing books a luxury only for the “well-off ”.
