FEBRUARY

-

THE second month of the year got off to a freezing start and there was disappointment in Tissington as it lost out on its chance to be crowned the Village of the Year as part of a televised national competition.

But February was Shrovetide month, and the 2018 game was described as a game to remember, that people would be talking about for a long time. It had everything

– a goal for each side, two welldeserving scorers, and even a healthy dose of suspense and subterfuge.

Severn Trent promised residents living in estates of Old Derby Road and in the trees estate that bosses were doing all they could to find the source of a foul odour that had been blighting the suburbs for nearly two years. The firm hoped to have the smell sorted within a few months of a meeting which took place in February.

An appeal begun to raise half a million pounds to build a new pavilion on the recreation ground. The old building was branded “shameful” by councillors.

A man was arrested after staging a seven-hour stand-off in the town centre. A flat above the Market Place had become the scene of a siege and the road was closed off while items were thrown from windows, including a television set.

Ashbourne Town Hall council stepped up its desperate pleas for help in sustaining its ownership of the town hall, which needed huge amounts of money spending on it. After snubbing a plan to form a Community Interest Company, the council appealed for help from the public to create a business plan.
