BOSSES at Severn Trent are suggesting they may have found the source of a foul smell that has been blighting the lives of scores of Ashbourne residents for many years.

The water company, which is responsible for the area’s water supply and drainage, says it has been working with “some parties” which might be contributing to the odour, which periodically affects the estates off Old Derby Road. Residents in the Hilltop area, in the Wyaston Road estates and in the “trees” estates such as Cedar Close and Poplar Crescent, have all reported the stench, which is often said to be worse during the warmer months.

In response, Severn Trent has been monitoring the air quality in the areas affected and holding a series of meetings in Ashbourne to update residents on the progress.

Now the firm says its work with “some parties” might have uncovered “changes” that have contributed to the odours. However Severn Trent refuses to say who the “parties” are – or even where they are based – because of “data protection”.

Service delivery manager Zelia Lockett said: “We continue to work with local businesses in and around Ashbourne who have been more than willing and helpful in relation to getting to the root cause of the issue.

“We have highlighted some parties who have found some areas where they need to complete some work to help ensure that they are not contributing to the ongoing issues within the area.

“These parties have full compliance with their processes and procedures, and have broken no laws or permit compliance, but may have made changes that may have contributed.

“I can’t reiterate enough how much local business have worked very proactively with us to help understand what may be contributing to the issue.

“The parties involved have initiated works to make changes that need to happen.”

Business have worked with us to help understand what may be contributing to the issue. Zelia Lockett
