● Peer of the realm, the 12th Marquis of Lothian, and farming expert Philip Binder were chosen to turn up the Shrovetide balls in 1989. Lord Lothian had strong Derbyshire connection­s, while Mr Binder was a consultant with Bagshaws Agricultur­al. Both said it was a great honour.

● A baby boom hit Peter Street in Ashbourne with three new arrivals in only five days. And a further two were expected to arrive in the 22-house street within a matter of weeks.
