● Five housing schemes that had been mooted as replacements for the town’s cattle market were due to go on public display in the new year. The shortlist had been whittled down from 100 schemes put forward by developers ahead of the closure of the market, which was due to move to Bakewell.

● The owner of the Izaak Walton Hotel, the 10th Duke of Rutland, died at the age of 79. His Grace had turned up the Shrovetide ball in 1993.
