Builder helps kids grow their own

-

A HOUSING developer which is creating a new estate in Ashbourne has treated its local school to a box of fruit and vegetable seeds.

Redrow Homes East Midlands, which is working on the Henmore Gardens development in Wyaston Road, donated a vegetable box and seeds to Ashbourne Hilltop Primary School, to enable the children to grow their own fruit and vegetables.

The firm says it is keen to encourage children in the local area to take an interest in gardening and learn more about where food comes from.

Sales consultant Jackie Sackman said: “Part of our commitment at Redrow Homes is to contribute to thriving communities, and to help provide a better way to live, so we’re sharing the excitement of growing fruits and vegetables from seed among children.

“I’m glad that I was able to donate the vegetable box myself, as I got to see the children’s excitement when we showed them how to get planting.”

The school’s head teacher Hazel Jaques said: “We were delighted to receive the vegetable box – it was welcomed with great enthusiasm by the children, who will no doubt be ensuring it gets watered every day!

“We are thrilled that the children will have the experience of growing their own food, so we’d like to thank Redrow Homes East Midlands for its kind donation and for helping the children understand where fresh food comes from.”
