Medal haul for all-girl teams at Derby and Sheffield galas

ASHBOURNE & District Swimming Club sent two allgirl teams to galas in a busy end to the season and they returned with a stack of medals.

The club took nine swimmers to the City of Derby July Jamboree Gala at Queens Leisure Centre and they won 28 medals, 22 of which were for first to third place.

Thirteen-year-old Anna Poyser led the way with four gold medals, for the 100m freestyle, 100m backstroke, 100m butterfly and 100m individual medley, adding silver in the 100m breaststro­ke.

Elena Andrews won the 12 years 100m individual medley and silver medals in the 100m freestyle and breaststro­ke.

Ellie Torpey (15) won three golds, for the 100m freestyle, 100m breaststro­ke and 100m individual medley, while youngers sister Isabel took bronze in the 13 years 100m breaststro­ke.

Keira Lee (14) won gold in the 100m butterfly and 100m individual medley. Katie Hancock (13) won gold in the 100m breaststro­ke and silver in the 100m backstroke.

Maizie Goddard (10) got silver in the 50m butterfly, while Sophie Duckmanton (10) got two silvers, for the 50m freestyle and 100m individual medley.

Sammy Poyser (10) won three bronze medals, for the 50m freestyle and backstroke and the 100m individual medley as well as two fourth place medals.

Next was the Derventio excel Summer Spectacula­r Sprint Meet in a 50m pool at Ponds Forge in Sheffield.

Eleven girls attended and the star for Ashbourne was Annabelle Croxford (12), winning a gold and two bronze medals.

Jess Kaul (14) won a bronze and Sophie Duckmanton (10) included a bronze in a string of personal best times.

Derventio excel is the Derbyshire elite training squad who take members from all county clubs to give them extra training and support.

Ashbourne’s Katie Haswell and Croxford are currently attending excel sessions.

Croxford’s gold came in the 100m butterfly and her bronzes in both the 100m breaststro­ke and 50m backstroke. Kaul’s bronze was in the 100m breaststro­ke.

Ellie Torpey and Imogen Scotcher (13) just missed out on medals with fourth places, as did Hancock.

Lee got a new PB in her 50m butterfly, as she also came fourth.

Michaela Dick (16) was sixth in the 50m breaststro­ke. Robyn Tilsley (15) set PBS in the 50m freestyle and the 100m backstroke, coming fourth.

Duckmanton rounded off a successful day for the club by smashing her PBS in all four of her events, winning a bronze medal for the 100m backstroke.
