Pete, Lisa combine for Trophy success

-

TEN pairs turned out to contest the Mixed Brooker Trophy at Ashbourne Golf Club, as the end of the competition season at the club draws closer.

The trophy had been postponed earlier in the season.

Mixed foursomes is probably the most challenging golf format.

Although the weather was calm and dry, recent wet weather meant that the course was soft and playing much longer than in the summer, so it was not going to be a day for low scoring.

The winners were Pete Sutton and Lisa Gregory who, despite a seven on the first hole, recovered well to play a steady front nine of gross 45 followed by a strong back nine of gross 42 and were just over their 14.5 handicap with a nett 72.5.

Their round included five pars.

Pete and Lisa were well ahead of runners-up Simon and Gill Lockwood, playing off their 9.5 handicap, who came in with a gross 86, nett 76.5.

They started with a birdie on the first hole and played well

on the front nine with a gross 40 but were not as consistent on the back nine, scoring gross 46.

Les Birkett and Alison Westerman were third with a gross 99, nett 79.5.

The final ladies’ competitions brought a couple of wins for Gill Lockwood.

Having recently gone up to 11 handicap, she immediately came down to 10 after the Thursday Stableford 7 by scoring 38 points, her best round of the season.

Her round included birdies at the 10th and 13th holes and seven pars.

Runner-up Lisa Gregory also had a good round, coming in with 35 points. Her round also included two birdies, at holes six and 13, plus three pars.

In the Sunday Stableford 7, Gill scored 33 points, made up of 16 points on the front nine and 17 on the back nine, with a birdie on hole 13 and eight pars.

Lisa was again runner-up with 25 points and Jill Bainbridge was one point behind in third place.
