End of an era for care worker Margaret

A CARE worker who has dedicated nearly 40 years to looking after residents at The Leys Residential Home has retired.

Colleagues have bid a fond farewell to Margaret Froggat, who started working at the Old Derby Road care home in 1981.

She began her career as a relief worker in the kitchens and laundry before training in Buxton and Stockport and, after three years at the home, she took up a permanent position.

Mrs Froggatt recalls how it was to work at the home in the early 1980s.

She said: “The home then was managed by a matron, Mrs Clarke, and a deputy, Mrs Worthington. The matron, when on duty, stayed in the flat in the home, which is now the social workers’ offices.

“If things were not done to matron’s standards ndards she would make sure they were done ne again.

“‘Stand by your beds!’ We used to say.”

Other memories Mrs Froggatt has shared include the heydays of Ashbourne’s summer er carnival, and appearing on a float which was set up p by residents and staff.

She says she was also fortunate enough to accompany residents on various outings and trips.

I have enjoyed my 39 years at the Leys Care Home, and have some fond memories.

She said: “I have enjoyed my 39 years at the Leys Care

Home, and have some fond memories.

“How things change over time. I would still be working there today but for the awful Covid-19 virus that we are dealing with. I got furloughed in March and, after a few months back, I decided with much thought and family discussions it was time to hand my notice in.

“But I have enjoyed all the years I have been working at The Leys and I’ve made some good friends, who I will miss dearly.

“I will call and see everyone hopefully in the future, when it is safe again.”
