ASHBOURNE’S mayor Sean Clayton has finally been able to open a new business in the town, months after he took over the chains of office in May.

Mr Clayton, and his wife Suzanne, cut the ribbon at Vulcan Self Storage, in the Airfield Industrial Estate, on Saturday, and they came away with a personal gift and charity donations.

The company’s owner Malcolm Ferniough donated an original painting, by his brother Alan, of the Ashbourne Soapbox Race, which Mr Clayton helped to organise in 2019, and the company made donations to Mr Clayton’s three chosen charities; The Royal British Legion, The Ashbourne Sports and Community Partnership and Little Hearts Matter.

Malcolm Ferniough and his family have been running a successful tanning and beauty supplies firm for the past 33 years but saw an opportunity arise in an empty warehouse unit across the road from their current firm.

They say they saw a need for a secure storage facility in the town and the pair have now developed ed Vulcan Self Storage, rage, which will be run alongside e and across the road from their established business.

Director Louise Gallimore said: “We realised d storage for business in Ashbourne and the s urrounding areas was in demand. “Having lived and worked in Ashbourne all our lives we saw the need for a secure storage facility in a convenient location.

“Also with the many new housing developments in the Ashbourne area, storage facilities whilst moving house were sought after.

“People need security for their goods, flexible access times in a convenient location.

“The ideal building was located across the road from our current business premises and this was where Vulcan Self Storage begun.”

At the opening on Saturday Mr Clayton was invited on a socially-distanced tour of the new facility, which has 86 units from 15 sq ft to 125 sq ft, along with two container units.

Access to the units, which are secured by a high tech pin code system, is available from 7am until 7pm Monday to Saturday.

The Self Storage industry will be remaining open during the second lockdown, as it is classed as an essential service, but booking appointments to view the self store facility is recommended and storers are asked to only access their units if essential and only travel if essential.
