Students have a ball and boost charity

Sixth-former EVIE PEARCE gives us an update on what she and some of her fellow students achieved just before they broke up for the Christmas holiday

-

HERE at QEGS, charity is something we really want to embody in our ethos, which is why we appoint two heads of charity at sixth form each year to help out with charitable events and to support one or two charities in particular. Our two heads this year are Asha Monro-jones and Alexis Sear.

They have decided that the two charities we are going to support are the Isabella Peatfield Memorial Fund, as we have done in previous years, and also Stop Hate UK.

The two heads of charity have made a great start in raising some money for these organisations, having raised just over £70 at a Christmas movie night for students, and also at other events such as “Guess the baby photo competition” and at sporting events.

However, it is not just those charities we support as a sixth form. They have also raised money for Children in Need with a competitive benchball match that raised over £140 and was a huge success with students.

To further this, as mentioned below, Asha and I organised a successful charitable donation to the Padley Centre in Derby.

As a sixth form we have raised money for Breast Cancer UK, Children in Need and Save the Children via the numerous wear your own clothes to school days that are organised by the senior leadership team.

Although this year has been very different at school and we are unable to do fund-raising, such as bake sales during lunches, or open evenings for younger year groups, as in previous years, we feel the time we have spent back at school has been successful. We are proud in this respect to say that although we have only been back at school for a short four-month period, we have been able to raise hundreds of pounds for various charities as a sixth form.

As previously mentioned, I would like to talk specifically about a charitable event organised just before we broke up for Christmas.

From Monday, December 14, to Thursday, December 17, Asha and I organised a shoebox collection at QEGS sixth form in order to raise donations for the Padley Centre in Derby. Over the course of just four days, we managed to collect 15 shoebox donations, as well as bags of food, books, clothes and other much-needed items.

These were all generously given by members of staff or other sixth-form students at QEGS. The donations were made alongside another shoe box donation project carried out by 1st Ashbourne Rangers and the Falcon Explorers.

I would like to thank everyone who gave a donation and to encourage any members of the public who care for this cause to also donate!

We enjoy fund-raising at sixth form, especially when it is in order to help other people – and it is with this enthusiasm that we hope to raise even more money for charity before our time at sixth form is over!

We love to help charity and hope we can do even more before our time in sixth form is over
