SOLID entries of 523 cattle and 1,714 sheep with cattle dearer than ever and sheep a shade less after a recent steep rise in prices. A slightly increased entry of 292 Store & Breeding Cattle with prices up again. Stronger cattle were particular­ly dear with heifers and steers both topping at £1,320 and feeding bulls £820, in-calf heifers reached £1,040. Another decent entry of 112 finished cattle with trade very strong. Top prices 255p and £1,742. The overall average for the 48 heifers looked good at 208.7p. OTM and Feeding Cows in short supply with only 80 forward and trade very brisk. Top prices 189p and £1,802, the overall average similar to last week at 129.6p.

Only 40 Calves on offer with bulls to £395 and heifers £178.

In the sheep section, trade for the 1,286 old-season lambs was a shade easier. The best on offer sold to 285p and £137.1p.

The SQQ average was down at 242p, failing to keep pace with last week’s exceptiona­l figure, but a significan­t improvemen­t on last year’s 210p. A good sample of 403 Cull Sheep, average £97.97.

80 BARREN, OTM AND FEEDING COWS OVERALL AVERAGE 129.6P

Only 80 on parade and a full lineup of buyers led to an astonishin­g trade. Can cows get any dearer? Top was a super trio of pure Blondes from Chris Shenton, of Handforth selling to 189, 187 and 176p/kg to record a top gross of £1802. 14 Natives had Hereford to 154p.

88 IN LAMB EWES

A strong trade for all with plenty of customers returning home empty handed. Top price of £146 for draft mule ewes scanned at 200% from Hayden Fletcher, of Peak Forest.

Leek Market

The Monthly Pedigree Dairy Sale attracted some quality entries and strong leading prices up to £2,400 for a heifer from John Stone & Family, with their entry also selling at £2,360, £2,200 and £2,000 with cows to £1,990 and young calves to £470. A solid enquiry again for butchers’ hoggets with the best quality selling to 282p/kg for an average 247p/kg overall. Cull ewes also a fast trade, to £156.

Barren cows continue to trade strong, with more leaner and dairy types, but leading prices of 176p/kg for a Hereford with black & whites to 150p/kg. Best quality butchers cattle in good demand, with a top price of 224p/kg for Limousin heifers and Limousin bulls to 211p/kg.

Calves met an excellent enquiry, with buyers for all qualities, and not enough to keep up with demand, with the entry selling to £435 for a British Blue bull calf and Blue heifers to £248.

Pig trade down on the week. Leading prices of 126p/kg for both bacon and cutting pigs.

Fewer about, topping at 176p/kg for a 625kg Hereford heifer from DA & LM Moss, of Heaton, with black & whites up to 150p/kg for a 750kg Holstein from DJ & KL Leadbetter, Sudbury and 142p/kg for a 540kg Friesian from J E Archer & Sons, Hilton.

CLEAN CATTLE

A few less forward but some great quality on offer and vendors taking advantage of the strong trade on offer for clean cattle, selling up to 224p/kg for a 505kg Limousin heifer from M Robinson, of Longsdon who also sold a 505kg Limousin heifer at 209p/kg. A 520kg Charolais heifer realised 200p/kg for Wayne Smith, of Basford. Young bulls topped at 211p/kg for a 610kg Limousin from Chris Barnsley, of Morridge with two Friesian bull selling well at 173p/kg and 152p/kg for 590kg bulls. Steers sold up to 181p/kg for a 545kg British Blue from

R E Green, of Ash Bank. Top headage price of £1287.10 for Limousin bulls, heifers to £1131.20 and £1055.45.

DAIRIES (98)

A really good entry forward for the January pedigree sale. A really buoyant trade. An exceptiona­l run of heifers from the Critstone Herd of John Stone of Onecote stole the show. Four out of the five passed the £2,000 mark. The fifth wasn’t far behind at £1,940 realising a superb average of £2,180. Messrs Grice of Melton saw one of their heifers reach £2,020 with another from regular vendor Ray Turner of Rownall at £2,000. Cows topped at £1,990 for a second calver from Messrs Mellor of Earl Sterndale. Trade in the commercial section was just as strong with Andrew Mills of Ratcliffe on Wreake seeing two of his heifers reach £2,100 and £2,030. Cows from Malcolm Trevor-jones were sought after with an Ayrshire cross thirdcalve­r reaching £1860 and a British Friesian fourth-calver at £1800.

PIGS (126)

Good numbers again but trade slightly down, with cutting pigs selling up to 126p/kg for an 84kg pig from J & B Fentem, who sold other cutters at 115p/kg, 110p/kg and 108p/kg. Bacon pigs topped at 126p/kg for a 98kg pig from PF PD Parson, with a 98kg pig at 125p/kg for Bernard Minshull, and 119p/kg twice for 97kg and 98kg pigs from J G Belfield. Heavy pigs sold up to 115p/kg for a

138kg pig from J G Belfield, Sheen, with 108kg pigs at 105p/kg for

PF & PD Parsons, who sold 106kg pigs at 99p/kg and 98p/kg paid for 105kg pigs from Bernard Minshull and also for 118kg pigs from JG Belfield.
