A big day with substantia­l entries in all department­s and some 742 cattle and 1,814 sheep on offer. Demand was outstandin­g in both sheep and cattle sections.

There were 64 spring lambs forward with an astonishin­g trade and prices that could not have been contemplat­ed. Top figures 725p/kg and £300.88 per head. The SQQ average for spring lambs was 635.8p/kg.

Hoggs (old season lambs) were also in great demand, with the best of the 1,405 to 386p/kg and £172.80 per head. The SQQ levelled at 309.5p.

Dealing with the 342 cull sheep, again plenty of trade with ewes to £155 to average £93.95.

There was a bumper crop of 571 store and breeding cattle with prices dearer than the previous week.

Steers sold to £1,410, heifers £1,320 and feeding bulls £1,100 and in-calf cows reached £1,330.

A useful entry of 98 finished cattle sold exceptiona­lly well with top figures 270p/kg and

£,681 per head. The average for the 40 heifers at 221.4p/kg gives an indication of demand.

Rather more over-30 months cattle on offer with 105 meeting a solid trade, top figures 187p and £1,664 with the average 142.6p. Calves still thin on the ground, bulls sold to £385 and heifers £398.

105 BARREN, OTM AND FEEDING COWS, OVERALL AVERAGE 142.69P OR £989.50

Top was a lovely Simmental cow from Paul Jolliffe, Cotton at 187p or £1496. Top 10 over 175p with the top 21 over 166p. Hereford to 160p, Angus to 180p and Lincoln Red to 137p.

40 BLACK & WHITE AND EX-DAIRY COWS, AVERAGE 125.1P/KG

Perhaps a little down but a lot of hard worked cows about reducing the average. Best cows still nicely over 145p and selling to 162p for Friesian, with an odd clean heifer at 168p. Leek Market

The Easter Spring Lamb Show and Sale attracted a a strong trade for those on offer, with the Champion selling to 700p/kg, and the Reserve Champion at 640p/ kg, both shown by Ian & Andrew Wilson, Hollington.

A strong trade for barren and clean cattle this Tuesday with plenty of buyers looking to secure numbers. Top price of 165p/kg for Holsteins with plenty above 140p/kg and fat heifers up to 218p/kg and bulls to 212p/kg. Dairies sold up to £1880 twice for fresh heifers, with cows to £1780. A huge demand for calves with a super trade selling up to £425 for Limousin bull calves and heifers to £280.

A strong trade for pigs aswell, with numerous pens 130p/kg and above topping at 158p/kg for cutting pigs and bacon pigs to 153p/kg.

Another excellent trade for and a strong entry forward and well fleshed types selling up to 165p/kg for a 590kg Holstein from JJ&PN Holdcroft, Brown Edge, who sold a 560kg Holstein at 158p/kg. Friesians sold to 161p/kg for a 720kg cow from DR&A Shuker & Son, Bosley and 158p/ kg for a 790kg Friesian from Foker Grange Farm, Leek.

A decent entry forward, with top prices of 218p/kg for a

525kg Limousin heifer from

Sam Clowes, Rudyard to gross £1144.50. Young bulls sold to 212p/kg for a 540kg Limousin from Chris Barnsley, Morridge Top who sold another at 208p/ kg for a 585kg Limousin to gross £1144.80 and £1216.80. A 800kg Simmental bull realised 184p/kg for a Rushton Spencer vendor to gross £1472.

DAIRIES (45)

Another unpredicta­ble trade saw the best to £1880 twice over from Malcolm Trevor-jones and Richard Lomas for two nice heifers both giving in excess of 30kg. Cows reached £1780 for a British Friesian second calver from John Kirby of Oakham with another from Robert Hayes of Chesterfie­ld at £1750.

PIGS (125)

A good number of pigs forward which met with a strong trade for all types. Pork pigs sold up to 136p/kg for 69kg pigs from A Worth, Marton, with others to 130p/kg and 127p/kg for 67kg pigs from DH Poulson, Llangadog.

Cutting pigs topped at 158p/kg for 82kg pigs from D H Poulson, Llangadog, who also sold 79kg pigs at 134p/kg. J&B Fentem sold cutters up to 139p/kg for 82kg pigs, who also sold others at 129p/ kg twice and 110p/kg.

Bacon pigs sold up to 153p/kg for 89kg pigs from J&B Fentem, with the Parson family, of Whitchurch, selling bacon pigs up to 150p/kg twice. 87kg pigs sold at 144p/kg for J G Belfield, Sheen, who also sold 91kg pigs at 142p/ kg. 142p/kg was paid for a pair of 97kg pigs from S Bailey, Biddulph and 140p/kg for 103kg pigs from J&B Fentem.

Heavy pigs sold up to 130p/kg for 119kg pigs from JG Belfield, who also sold heavies at 128p/ kg and 126p/kg . PF&PD Parsons sold an 118kg pig at 123p/kg and a 109kg pig at 111p/kg. Cull sows sold up to 93p/kg for a 216kg sow from Rosie Watson, with a 252kg sow at 91p/kg for DJ Pope,
