Bakewell Market

-

AN exceptionally busy market following the bank holiday with large entries in all sections but demand easily able to cope with the increased supply and trade remaining very brisk indeed.

The relaxation of the rules allowed vendors to come to the ringside, just to see their own stock sold. This worked well. The largest section was the store and breeding cattle with exactly 600 animals forward.

The breeding cattle department set the trend with in-calf Limousin-cross heifers to £2,000 and a Limousin cow and calf to £2,160.

In the regular stores, steers reached £1,440, heifers £1,300 and feeding bulls £1,300. Despite the massive entry, there was no slackening of the trade. It is fair to say that the store price continues to reflect the wonderful results in the finished ring.

There were 121 finished cattle forward hitting the sort of figures only usually seen at Christmas. Heifers peaked at 284p with a top gross price at a remarkable £2004. The overall average for 47 heifers looked good at 220.4p.

Over-30 months and feeding cows were out in force with a bumper entry of 138. Top figures 200p and £1802 with the overall average a remarkable 152p.

A few more calves about, 38 to be precise, and selling well with bulls to £395 and heifers £275.

The sheep department was also busy with a decent selection of 95 spring lambs. Top figures 448p/kg and £176.20 per head. The SQQ average was 348.8p.

Old season lambs (hoggs) were out in reasonable numbers with 1196 on offer. The best on offer reached 392p with a top gross figure of £183.32 and the SQQ average creditable 318.4p.

Rather more cull sheep than recent looked very well sold, ewes to £165 to average £112.17.

138 BARREN, OTM AND FEEDING COWS, AVERAGE 152.1P OR £1048 A superb entry of 138 cows from 63 vendors and sold on a remarkable trade once again with cows equally as dear as the bank holiday record price. Two OTM heifers from Steven Jones, Belper topped the day at 220p £1531 (31mths) and 211p £1337 (33mths). Best cow was a big Charolais at 190p £1390 from a Cheshire vendor with big Charolais cows from Charlie Boden totting up to £1802 (181p). Top 22 cows sold over 180p with several of the big cows grossing over £1500.
