Cream sales rise to the top

-

SALES of clotted cream have taken off, with demand soaring 36% during lockdown.

More people wanted an “affordable indulgence” and have been tucking into scones in the pandemic.

Nicholas Rodda, managing director of Cornish clotted cream maker Rodda, told trade journal The Grocer: “Consumers were seeking comfort and nostalgia more than ever.”

It comes as supermarket Sainsbury’s had to apologise for displaying an image of a huge scone covered the Devon way in a Cornish store.

A Truro store showed cream and then jam – the opposite of how it’s done in Cornwall, where jam is put on first, then cream.
