Seven’s just heaven for Jake
JAKE Walklett scored seven as Ashbourne Aztecs Under16s hammered Marlborough Rovers Yellow 11-1 in the Burton Under-16 Junior League.
Striker Walklett, an under-15 playing in a higher age group, produced a superb display to inspire the Aztecs on what first looked as though it could be a tough day.
The Aztecs were without a number of players due to unavailability and injuries and fielded only nine players, one less than their opponents.
However, being a player short didn’t matter in the slightest for the Aztecs.
From the start, they controlled possession and Walklett gave them an early lead. Toby Carolan added two in quick succession, the second a superb free kick from 25 yards.
As the Aztecs grew in confidence Walklett had added another three before the break to establish a 6-0 half-time lead.
After the break the pattern continued, Walklett scored two more either side of a Marlborough consolation before Carolan completed his hat-trick with a penalty.
Logan Cuthbert got the goal his performance deserved with 10 minutes remaining before Walklett hit his seventh and the Aztecs’ 11th in the final minutes.
All nine players deserve great credit and the team now looks forward to its final game together on Sunday at Mappleton.
