Third Age (U3A) are celebrating the movement’s first national day today, and they will be championing the various new skills that can be developed by joining.

Now known and branded simply as U3A, members throughout the UK will be using National U3A Day to promote the values of joining the group and spreading the message that it is not just about using new skills.

The group’s motto is “learn, laugh, live”, explains Ashbourne’s chairman Sue Allen and even in such a difficult year, its members have managed to follow that to the letter.

She said: “The last year has been a difficult one for our members but all rose to the magic of Zoom to keep in touch initially learning from each other on how to do so.

“Many enjoyed being able to sit in the comfort of their home to continue meeting with their groups plus the monthly presentations via Zoom open to all members.

“All would agree there is nothing better than meeting face to face, sharing skills or for a chat after the meeting and members look forward to when restrictions are eased.

“There are 30 interest groups to choose from led by the group leaders who are also members of the U3A, but have the expertise to share with others.

“U3A membership is open to all, working part-time or retired.

“Age is just a number and not one ever under discussion at U3A.

“We want to enjoy ourselves, learn new skills and be active, all for a membership of just £14 per year.”

Ashbourne & District U3A has more than 370 members and the interest groups include current affairs, family history, photography, gardens, choir, science and engineering, cycling and walking, and natural history.
