Setford lands Grundy medal at five under

-

JULIAN Setford won the Mick Grundy Order of Merit Medal men’s competition at Ashbourne Golf Club, shooting a fiveunder-par nett 66 off his course handicap of 10 in a round that included birdies at the sixth and 15th holes.

The first division winner was past captain Peter Flinn with a nett 70 which included a birdie on the eighth.

He was one shot ahead of plus-one golfer Simon Griffiths, who went three under par for the last five holes for a gross round of 70, nett 71. Ryan Overton and Darren Hooley also had nett 71s but not such a good back nine.

The second division winner was ex-ashbourne RUFC scrum half Niall Simmons with a nett 69, three shots better than

John Leedham and Paul Higton.

The higher handicappers found scoring more difficult with so little run on the ball and another past captain, Martin Tunaley, won division three with a nett 76. Steve Allen and yet another past captain, Steve Bryan, were second and third with nett 77 and 78 respectively.

The tournament is one of the big dates of the Ashbourne GC calendar, played in memory of the Derbyshire county player who was a much-loved and well-respected member of the club before his untimely death at the age of 28.

The first big charity event of the year will be held at the club on Friday, with over a hundred golfers taking part in the Rotary Club of Ashbourne Charity Day.

Proceeds are to be split between Derby Samaritans and other Rotarysupported charities.
