Charith wins toss again as Ashbourne march on

-

UTHUM De Silva was the star man with the bat again as Ashbourne made it two wins in a row in Derbyshire County League Division Five South.

The 15-year-old struck an unbeaten 56 but it was his father, Charith, who set up a seven-wicket victory over Rosehill Methodists with an opening burst of three wickets.

Rosehill, who had been put in after Charith continued his 100% record with the toss, were 6-3 in the face of his swing bowling and though they battled to 60 without further loss, Shahid Ali broke through, bowling Richard Sharpe for 21 and Asher Alam for 26 on his way to 2-16 from 10 overs.

Pyush Joshi, another of the club’s juniors, then took 3-21 and Charith returned to finish the innings with his fourth wicket, taking 4-16 from 6.3 overs as Rosehill were shot out for 102 in 35.3 overs.

When Ashbourne batted, Sasanka Appuhamilage and Uthum De Silva rattled the scoreboard along until Appuhamilage was out for 22 with the score on 46.

Muhammad Jawwad Haque and Richard Hill went cheaply but Uthum could not be budged and was on 56 not out, accompanied by Nick Pearson

on eight not out, when the target was reached in the 26th over.

There was agony for Ashbourne seconds, however, as they fell five runs short of chasing down a modest Kings Bromley seconds target of 119 in Division Nine South West.

Andy Hill, Paul Duke and Deshanthan Sureshkumar each took two wickets as Ashbourne worked their way through the Kings Bromley line-up, bowling them out in the 40th over.

But they were soon in trouble in their reply as Muhammad Tanveer took three early wickets.

Only Shane Wibberley, who hit a defiant 50, reached double figures as the innings fell away, Tanveer continuing to take 6-20 from eight overs.

Finn Upton also took 3-24 for Kings Bromley and Ashbourne had seven overs left to get the six more runs they needed when they were bowled out.

CLIFTON’S difficult season in Division One continued with a 29-run defeat to Sawley which puts them on the bottom of the table.

Simon Moore won the toss and put Sawley in at Chapel Lane and, for the most part, they were only held up by William Halford, who made 52

from 123 balls.

Bilal Hussain (3-34 from 12 overs) and Mohsin Ali (3-37 from 12 overs) bowled good spells and the innings ended in the 48th over for 149 when Harry Moore took his second wicket, finishing with 2-19 from 6.3 overs.

It looked a gettable target but Clifton ran into Sawley’s West Indian opening bowler Renaldo Holder, who quickly sent back Ali and Aqib Afzaal, both for four-ball ducks, and went on to take 6-35.

Usman Afzaal made 32 and Matt Wilson 20, while Harry Moore was last man out for 28 but Clifton were well short.

Clifton seconds strolled to an eight-wicket victory away to Chellaston thirds on Sunday.

Chellaston were bowled out for 146 in 40 overs with allrounder Stuart Apanasewicz the star man, taking 4-22 with his spin and then hitting 44 not out.

He was accompanied in a match-winning century stand by Tom Hilton who hit 68 not out and they reached the target with two wickets down in the 38th over.

Rob Archer was the hero for the thirds as they scraped a win to stay top of Division Nine South West.

Archer took 4-9 from nine overs as they shot out Sawley fourths for 93.

The reply was in dire straits at 18-5, though, before Matt Jones made 16 and Oliver Mccurrach 17 – then Archer strode in at eight and hit 32 not out from 37 balls to get them over the line with seven wickets down.

The thirds went out of the James Harwood Cup the next day, kept to 94-9 by Ockbrook & Borrowash fourths, who cruised to an eight-wicket win.

BRAILSFORD had a nightmare away to Risley in Division Three South, being bowled out for 87, in which Alexander Reid made 27.

Duncan Player then took two wickets but Risley cruised in by eight wickets in 14.1 overs.

With Taj Shazad, Peter Cartledge, Ayaz Shazad, Liam Duffy and Maqbool Shah all scoring in the 20s, Brailsford seconds put up 176-9 at home to Mickleover seconds in Division Six South but their opponents knocked them off with two wickets down.
