Chopper’s tough landing to help injured boy

-

A HELICOPTER pilot had to take on a challenging landing at Dovedale on Sunday to help rescue a six-year-old boy who suffered an injury at the beauty spot.

The child fell at Lover’s Leap, an isolated limestone summit that towers over the popular valley, and he fractured his leg.

Derby Mountain Rescue Team’s volunteers were first at the scene and closed off the busy footpath below Lover’s Leap while they waited for a crew from the Midlands Air Ambulance to arrive.

The charity’s pilot positioned the helicopter directly over Lover’s Leap to ensure the boy had to travel as short a distance as possible.

He was then flown to hospital for further treatment.

Last week a walker was airlifted to hospital after falling down a steep slope in the Peak District. A 40-year-old woman suffered the fall between Youlgreave and Middleton in the National Park on Thursday .

She was treated at the scene by paramedics at around 9am, before members of Derby Mountain Rescue Team arrived to assist the East Midlands Air Ambulance.

It was the mountain rescue team’s second callout of the week to the Youlgreave and Middleton area.

On Tuesday, a 77-year-old man was airlifted by the Coastguard to Royal Stoke Hospital after suffering suspected hip injuries following a fall while out walking with friends in the same area.

Further details of the incident were shared on the mountain rescue team’s Facebook page on Wednesday evening.

A spokesman posted to say: “The team were called just after 5pm to a 77-year-old male who had fallen near a riverside footpath.”
