A SUPERB nett 64 by Mike Burton won him the prestigious Burkill Cup at Ashbourne Golf Club.

Burton had birdies on the seventh and 13th holes, and his round was the highlight of a low scoring day.

After playing well in the Brough Jeffrey Trophy event on the previous weekend, Burton went one better and won by two shots from his nearest rival, Mick Roberts, who won the second division with a nett 66.

The first division winner, with a gross 69, was scratch golfer Rich Pigott who, despite being two over after three holes, fought back superbly with an excellent run of holes including a birdie on the fifth, back-to-back eagles on seven and eight and birdies on 15 and 17.

Second in the division was Julian Setford, with three birdies in a nett 72.

Mark Burford was third with the same score, including birdies on eight and what is reckoned to be the most difficult hole on the course, the 12th.

In the second division, John Hammond was second to Roberts with a nett 68 and in division three Dave Williams won, also with a 68, one ahead of Phil Green with a nett 69, with Mick Beech third a further shot back.

Previously, in the White Tee medal, the best scores were in the second division.

The star performer was Simon Spencer with a nett 65 thanks in the main to a superb front nine of gross 35 which included birdies on two, five and seven.

Second in the division was Andrew Innes with a birdie on the long par three 16th and Steve Hall was third with a nett 68.

Paul Bebbington won the first division, in which the scores were slightly less impressive, with a nett 71, including birdies on five and eight.

Dean Higton, who birdied 17, was second with a 72 and another long time member, Chris Froggatt, third on the same score with birdies on four and 13.

Gerald Taylor won division three on countback with a nett 72 from past captain Bernard Bembridge, who had a two on the third, with Ian Ward in third.
