Great event as 129 turn out for Captain’s Home Day at Ashbourne GC

-

THERE was an excellent turnout for Ashbourne Golf Club captain Ian Mcdarmaid’s Home Day.

A well-organised day ran very smoothly and was well received by members.

Mcdarmaid welcomed and started 129 golfers from the first tee and some good scoring was achieved in a Stableford competition.

With 34 golfers achieving a nett par score or better, the scoring reflected that the course and greens were in first class condition.

The first three in Division One (handicap -1 to 12) scored 40 points but on countback it was Simon Lockwood who triumphed from Peter Jessup and Mark Knight.

In Division Two (1320), Anthony Bates had a superb 43 points, with Paul Fowler scoring 40 points in second and Nick Walker third.

In Division Three (2140) Danny Neill had the highest score of the day with 44 points, followed by David Branson and Frank Mccabe.

The nearest the pin prizes were quite different with Simon Griffiths setting an early marker of 2.03 metres on the 16th that was not beaten.

However, on the third hole it was a different story, with Richard Piggott starting.

His effort was quickly beaten by past captain

Bob Carter, before being beaten by past president Paul Cook.

However, his 0.79 metres was finally pipped by club secretary Duncan

Renshaw with 0.58 metres.

There was a hole in one prize of a year’s full membership on offer but, despite a few close calls, no one was successful.

A competition on the putting green followed and Garry Morris was crowned the “unofficial putting champion” taking 15 putts for the nine holes.

The junior section held a Captain’s Cup competition which was won by junior captain Harry Bates with an excellent medal round of nett 67.

George Derbyshire came second and Jamie Naylor third.
