Canine food store is barking up right tree
A NEW canine food store offering raw and high-end natural treats, bones and dried foods has opened in Ashbourne.
Carole Dean, who has more than 30 years’ experience of running a large boarding kennel and a successful record of breeding dogs for the show ring, has drawn on help from the Governmentbacked New Enterprise Scheme to open “K9 Choice”, at Darley Moor Airfield.
The new shop, which also stocks handmade canine accessories from small local suppliers, sits alongside the popular Aviator Café and sets out to offer pet owners a healthier selection of treats and foods for their pampered pooches.
Carole says the business idea came about in response to concerns over the use of cheap food fillers in dog food and the increase in sales of chemically-enhanced treats and chews.
She said: “I’ve done my research and want people to be given better choices in pet nutrition. To that end, we stock top quality frozen organic meats from Norway; naturally dried treats and chews with no added chemicals, as well as dry foods from reputable manufacturers.
“I’ve found that, since moving to a more natural way of feeding my own dogs about 12 years ago, the difference in their general health – especially their teeth and gums – was quite dramatic – and all at a reasonable cost.
“My daughter and I have launched this business to share our experiences with others looking for advice and sensible recommendations.”
The new store is open on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 12pm until 4pm, on Thursdays from 4pm until 7pm, on Fridays from noon until 4pm and on Saturdays from 11 until 4pm and closed on Sundays and Mondays.
Orders can be collected out of hours by arrangement.
