Bakewell Market

-

ARCTIC conditions in the Peak District made travelling very difficult, but intrepid farmers and hauliers managed to deliver 355 Cattle and 917 Sheep to Bakewell. Those able to present stock were rewarded with an excellent trade in all departments.

Store & Breeding Cattle numbers were well down on the catalogued entry with some 180 on offer out of about 300 that were booked in. The majority of the cancellations have already rebooked in for the next market.

Out of the Store Cattle that did make it to market there were plenty of highlights with Steers to £1,350, Heifers £1,320 and Bulls £1,050.

In the Breeding section Cows & Calves made up to £1,700 with in calf Cows to £950.

For such a wintry day there was decent entry of Finished Cattle with 72 on offer. Top figures

308p and £1,982 per head and the Heifer average at 245.5p demonstrates the strength of demand. OTM and Feeding

Cows were also well sold with 94 forward. Top prices 235p and £1,538 per head. The overall average looked particularly good at 147.8p.

Not a good day for showing Calves with only 9 appearing.

In the Sheep department there were 802 lambs – a remarkable figure in view of the conditions. Nothing wrong with the trade with the best to 324p and £161.70 per head.

The SQQ average looked healthy at 291.4p.

Just 115 Cull Sheep with Ewes to £152 and the average £108.13.

The same cannot be said for vendors many of whom decided that it would be better not to set out. As a consequence, numbers were well down. However, 160 Store Cattle did make it to Bakewell and with
