AGM told year a big succes as captains switch

-

ASHBOURNE Golf Club recovered from a slow start to 2021 for members to enjoy a full programme, club captain Ian Mcdarmaid reported at last week’s annual general meeting.

It was a year in which the club hosted the Midland Boys’ Championships, a Robert Rock Junior

Tour event, while also becoming an official signatory to the R&A Women in Golf Charter.

Three juniors were also selected for Derbyshire this year and Mcdarmaid hosted a successful Members’ Day in August, organised as a thank you to members for their support throughout 202021.

The retiring captain said all these things had raised the profile of the club and he regarded the progress the club has made over the last 12 months as the highlight of his captain’s year.

Seniors captain Malcolm Wilson gave a report and presented Tony Broadhurst with the John Abson Trophy.

Paul Padden gave a resume of a successful year for the junior section, whose numbers continue to increase.

Club chairman Martyn Shinner had opened the meeting, ahead of a report from president

Gill Lockwood, who congratulated Mcdarmaid

on a successful year and particularly for his enthusiasm and the job he has done promoting and supporting the club.

The new captain is

Barrie Ritchie, who was presented with his captain’s tie by Mcdarmaid, who in turn was presented with his past captain’s tie by Lockwood.

Peter Bembridge was voted in as vice captain.

The new seniors captainis Mark Courtney and the junior captain is Jamie Naylor.

It is hoped that the traditional Captain’s Drive In will be able to go ahead on New Year’s Day.
