The final sale for 2021 and a quiet one for the Bank Holiday Tuesday but a good turnout of lambs and cull ewes.

Lambs were a highlight, with an excellent entry for the Christmas week, saw lambs up to 341p/ kg and to average 287.8p/kg or £121.65/head overall. Cull ewes also a fast trade and much firmer, up to £177/head. Small entries in the barren cattle, dairy and calf sections today.

BARREN COWS

A small entry selling up to 128p/ kg twice for a 860kg Holstein and a 760kg Holstein, both from J Bailey & Sons, Greenway Bank with a 775kg Aberdeen Angus making 123p/kg for Dan Beswick, Ipstones. Top headage prices of £1100.80 and £972.80 for Holsteins and Angus to £953.25.

CLEAN CATTLE

A small entry sold up to 215p/kg for a 595kg Simmental heifer from Rushton Spencer to gross £1279.25. Herefords sold up to 201p/kg for a 495kg heifer and a 500kg Hereford heifer realised 200p/kg, to gross £994.95 and £1000 respective­ly.

DAIRIES

A seasonal entry with a Pedigree Jersey cow and Fleckveihs included within todays offering. The Cotton family at Whiston exhibited Eryri Bouquet, a 3rd calved Jersey giving 29kg she went on to make £1300. Other newly calved Holstein heifers to £1340. ● The Government needs to ‘get serious’ about farming against the backdrop of the labour crisis, soaring input costs and Brexit trade deals, NFU president Minette Batters has said, adding the past year had been ‘extraordin­ary’ for the industry due to multiple crises.

PIGS (84)

A good entry for the festive week sale and trade similar to last week. Cutting pigs top at 130p/kg for 79kg pigs from J & B Fentem, of Alsop en le Dale, who also sold 78kg pigs at 120p/kg and 79kg pigs at 106p/kg for a trio of 84kg pigs at 120p/kg for David Goldstraw, of Meerbrook.

Bacon pigs sold up to 130p/kg for a pair of 95kg pigs from PF & PD Parsons, of Whitchurch, with Massie Farms, of Wood Eaton, selling a run on bacon pigs at 128p/kg, 126p/kg, 125p/kg twice and 124p/kg with J & B Fentem selling pigs at 123p/kg and 122p/kg twice.

Heavy pigs sold up to 104p/kg for a 110kg pig from the Parsons, who also sold a pair at 98p/kg and 118kg pigs at 87p/kg. A 107kg pig made 94p/kg for J &B Fentem.
