Another medal haul for young swimmers

ASHBOURNE Swimming Club members won 14 medals at the MAD Open Meet arranged by neighbouri­ng Matlock SC at the Arc in Matlock.

Sammy Poyser, fresh from her success in the Derbyshire Chamnpions­hips, was again in excellent form, winning three golds, in the girls’ 50m 13 years backstroke, 50m freestyle and 100m freestyle.

Ellie Harrison won two golds, in the girls’ 12 years 100m freestyle and 50m butterfly and adding two silvers for the 200m freestyle and 200m individual medley.

Bella Margiotta won gold in the girls’ 50m 14 years backstroke and silver in the 100m breaststro­ke.

Owen Richard-jones kept the gold medals coming with one in the boys’ 11 years 100m breaststro­ke, adding a fourth place in the 50m backstroke.

Daniel Margiotta won silver in the boys’ 12 years 50m butterfly and bronze in the 50m breaststro­ke, taking two seconds off his personal best in that one.

Jacob Brown won bronze medals in the boys’ 10 years 50m backstroke and the 100m freestyle.

It was the first open meet for several of the swimmers.

Chloe Gibbons came fourth in the girls’ 14 years 50m butterfly and fifth in the 200m freestyle, while Amy Fowler came fifth in the girls’ 13 years 100m breaststro­ke.

Sophie Cartlidge, recently awarded the “most improved swimmer” at the club in 2021, won bronze in the girls’ 11 years 100m breaststro­ke, took 10 seconds off her PB in the 50m freestyle and three seconds off her PB in the 50m breaststro­ke.

Elena Andrews set PBS in both the 50m and 100m freestyle and Edie Hambleton took 10 seconds off her PB in the girls’ 14 years 100m breaststro­ke.

Alex Wilson (50m freestyle), Scarlett Andrews (girls’ 13 years 50m freestyle), Bella Carolan (girls’ 11 years 100m backstroke) also had strong swims.

The club are holding trials for new members currently.
