Third fatality on Ashbourne roads in weeks as man in 20s is killed

A THIRD person has died on Ashbourne’s roads in just a few weeks, following a collision between a car and a pedestrian close to the town.

The latest tragedy occurred on Thursday, when police were called to the B5035 between Ashbourne and Kniveton at around 9.10pm and they found a man in his 20s with fatal injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The road was closed while investigat­ions began into the accident, which involved a Nissan Juke and a pedestrian.

Officers are now appealing for any informatio­n regarding the collision.

No details about the people involved have been released at the time the News Telegraph went to press.

It brings the number of people who have died on roads in Ashbourne in the past few days to three, after pedestrian Jeanette Lord, 56, and her dog Bramble died in a collision also involving a motorcycle on the A52 bypass On Saturday, March 26.

Conleath Grant, 58, was riding the motorbike and was taken to hospital with serious injuries, where he later died. Regarding Thursday night’s crash, a spokespers­on for Derbyshire police said: “A man has died following a collision close to Ashbourne. The force received a call at 9.10pm to reports of a collision between a Nissan Juke and a pedestrian on the B5035 heading out of Ashbourne towards Kniveton.

“At the scene, a man in his 20s was found with fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. His family have been made aware and our thoughts are with them at this most difficult of times.

“Specialist officers are supporting the family as further enquiries are made into the circumstan­ces of the collision.

“Detectives are keen to hear from anyone who may have seen a man wearing dark clothing in the area prior to 9.10pm.”
