IT has been a busy start to the season for Ashbourne Golf Club’s women with club competitions and inter-club matches already in full swing.

In the Spring Meeting, Alison Westerman played to her handicap with a superb 23 points on the front nine, staying in front even though she could add only 13 more on the back nine. Her 36 was four clear of Anne Colwell.

Westerman also won Sunday Stableford number two with 32 points, Colwell only a point behind her this time.

The performance of the season so far has come from newcomer Sophia Reed, who only took up golf last year.

After winning the nine-hole Stableford in April with 21 points, she won Medal number one with an impressive gross 109, nett 64, reducing her 45 handicap to 36.7.

Sue Jessup was runner-up with a nett 81 but then won Stableford number two with 31 points; number one having been won by Pat Richardson with 30 points. Lisa Gregory won the Easter Stableford with 31 points.

Gill Lockwood won the Inaugural Cup, adding 14 points on the back nine to a decent front nine of 17. Once again, Colwell had to settle for second, with 31 points.

In the Derbyshire League, the Silver team started with a 3-2 defeat away to Chesterfield but have followed it with a 3.5-2.5 away win against Mickleover and a 3-2 home win over Matlock.

The Bronze team have drawn at home to Matlock Red and lost 3-2 at home to Kedleston.

The first round of the Taskers over-50s Trophy saw Ashbourne beat Breadsall Priory 8-6 over two legs.

They went 4-3 up at home with wins for Lockwood, Sally Benn, Dee Gemmell and Ruth Sinclair and, after a tough battle, the away leg was won by the same score when Diane Woollands won her match on the third extra hole.
