Village hall is set for live music nights

- By Gareth Butterfield gareth.butterfield@ashbournenewstelegraph.co.uk

ALSTONEFIELD Village Hall is booked out for two nights of live music next month, to help villagers celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

Performers are lined up from the UK and across the pond for the biggest event in the village hall’s live music series, which has burst back into life this year following the pandemic.

On Saturday, June 4, Tom Mcconville, described as one of England’s finest fiddle players, will be joined by pianist Michael Biggins, a graduate of The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.

They will perform alongside Us-born singer and guitarist Brooks Williams and Dan Walsh, singer, songwriter and virtuoso clawhammer banjo player.

And on Sunday, June 5, Suzie Ungerleider – formerly known as Oh Susannah – will bring her American folk talent to the village hall stage.

Suzie was born in Massachusetts, but raised in Vancouver, and has released seven albums and two EPS.

Concert series organiser Martin Snodin explains: “Inspired by the well-known song by Stephen Foster, a prolific writer of American folk songs, her artist and recording identity sat well with her American folk roots.

“Her album ‘Johnstown’ was considered a contemporary folk-noir masterpiece brimming with ghostly songs of melancholic beauty and menace.

“Her voice evokes a cinematic narration to simultaneously warm the heart and chill the blood.”

Suzie will be supported by Chris Cleverley, who has gigged and recorded extensively across the UK, working with artists such Dan Whitehouse, Eliza Marshall and John Elliot.

He is about to start work on a fourth album after his most current, Live From The Glass Isle, received rave reviews.

Performing at Alstonefield as part of a tour, Chris will be playing his already acclaimed songs alongside previews of his much-anticipated new material. Each evening of entertainment begins at 7.30pm and tickets cost £13.
