A massive turnout again from 72 different vendors from a wide radius all showing cows in Bakewell. Plenty of lean cows about as it’s the time of year with the long dry summer and now cold nights having an effect on the cows. Trade very hot once again with 28 cows topping £2/ kg with 14 buyers operating at ringside and strong competitio­n from start to finish. Pure Blonde cows topped at 246 (£1992) for Messrs Richardson with another good cows from G Wainwright at 234p. Plenty of very good fed cows 200-218p with a big number £1500-£1700.

The third week of similar numbers which is great to see. Better bulls 248p plus with the best up to 274 pence for a good shaped Limousin from Robert Hardy, Cauldon Low with a couple of big boys from David Goddard over £2000. Nine Friesians averaged 210p and sold up to 221p with 8 Shorthorn to 210p.

A tremendous entry of 680 cull and grazing ewes sold to a wide range of buyers with 6 grazing buyers operating as well as the regulars. Best heavy Texel ewes in short supply peaking at £154/head and the top 10 pens averaging £143. Best Suffolks in the £125-£138 bracket. Mule ewes harder to sell this week but lacking in the big heavy sorts this week.

358 CULL SHEEP – AVE £64.38 PER HEAD

Given the falling trade nationally it was strong for all types to a top of £159. A number of plain ewes within the entry with numerous grazing customers operating.

Leek Market

An improvemen­t in trade in the sheep shed this week, saw lambs up to 270p/kg and £147.60 to average 235p/kg. More lambs required every week! Cull ewes sold up to £159 but plenty of leaner ewes forward to return an average of £73.

Another strong trade for fat pigs with prices reaching 198p/kg with quality selling around 175p – 190p/kg.

Barren cows sold on a brisk trade with a top price of 187p/kg for a Longhorn, and average of 139.19p/kg. A small entry of clean cattle sold up to 227p/kg.

A mixed quality entry of dairies this Tuesday but trade still brisk, seeing heifers to £2620 and cows to £2500.

Another large entry of calves met a strong trade, seeing Blue bulls to £385 and heifers to £210.

Other heifers at 200p/kg for a 595kg Angus from Glyn Redfern, Onecote who also sold a 595kg Angus for 191p/kg. A 565kg Angus sold for 198p/kg from S Pennington & Son, Altrincham. A 715kg Simmental steer realised 209p/kg for B J Bailey,biddulph Park.

Top headage price of £1569.60 for the 720kg Blue heifer with other heifers at £1190 & £1136.45, with steers to £1494.35 and bulls to £1305.25.

A very mixed quality forward on Tuesday however the best continue to sell exceptiona­lly well. Andrew Weston of Litton topped the day at £2620 for a

30kg heifer with another heifer from Derek Davenport of Sandbach close behind at £2580. Cows peaked at £2500 for a second calver from Phillip Brocklehur­st of Mobberley.

Cutters topped at 188p/kg for 80kg pigs from J & B Fentem who sold other cutters for 183p, 182p, 171p & 170p, with Massie Farms selling up to 186p/kg for 82kg gilts. 180p/kg for 77kg pigs from P J Saunders and 176p/kg for 81kg pigs from Ray Rowlinson.

Bacon pigs sold up to 198p/kg for a pen of 86kg pigs from Ray Rowlinson, with Massie Farms selling bacon pigs at 190p, 189p, 184p, 180p, 179p (x3). 185p/kg for 86kg pigs from Bernard Minshull, who also sold an 86kg pig for 182p/kg.

One heavy pig at 110kg sold for 134p/kg from PF & PD Parsons. Cull sows topped at 75p/kg for a 290kg sow from P J Saunders and also for a 282kg sow from S Richardson, Barnsley who sold others at 74p, 70p, 69p and 64p. Pig Averages

Best lambs forward topping at 270p/kg and again, the heavier weights meeting faster trade in general.

Meat is very much at a premium. Top headage price of £147.60.

Overall average at 235p/kg and many more could have been sold with no detriment to trade.
