Ashbourne Rotary Club

AT its last meeting, the Rotary Club of Ashbourne donated £1,000 to the Aquabox charity to provide access to clean water for flood victims in Pakistan.

These activities and Rotary’s engagement through its worldwide network of 46,000 similar clubs is enabling charities such as Aquabox to assist victims of disasters; in providing past and continuing assistance both here and in Ukraine to Ukrainians displaced from their homes; and in its historic and ongoing drive to eradicate polio, demonstrate Rotary’s uniqueness as an organisation.

Rotarians were also updated on other club activities.

The Young Musicians Competition will take place on Saturday, November 5, at Ashbourne Methodist Church starting at 1.30pm.

This popular competition features school-aged children demonstrating their musical skills. The audience will be treated to a varied and entertaining showcase of local talent.

Further details can be found on the club website.

The club will be repeating the very successful Christmas Shoebox Appeal where last year the club through the generosity of the local community collected nearly 500 shoeboxes full of essential supplies and a small gift which were distributed to deprived children in parts of the world where they receive nothing at Christmas.

Working with the Teams4u charity we hope to repeat the success of last year and boxes can be dropped off during November at David Neill’s in Compton and Springfield Stores who are kindly acting as the main drop-off point. For further details please email Rotarian Kevin Barclay on ashbournerotaryshoeboxappeal@gmail.com.

The club will also be undertaking its annual charity Christmas tree sale from Shaw Croft car park from middecember. The speaker for the evening was Nick Lockett, who talked about photographing historic Derbyshire.

It was a great talk and for anyone with a bent to history and or photography it was absolutely absorbing.

Nick was Introduced by Rotarian John Sinclair and thanked by Rotarian Paul Archer.

Ashbourne Stroke Support Club

ON the afternoon of Friday,

October 7, the club welcomed the return of Tina Dodsworth, who led the 25 members and helpers present through a series of mainly chair-based exercises designed to prevent falls or help us get up again if we do fall, all of which are approved by Age UK.

Once again we enjoyed a few laughs when what we were trying to achieve went very wrong.

Yet again we were very grateful for the skill and help that Mrs Dodsworth brings to us.

Our next two meetings are very different. The first will again start at 2.30pm on Friday, October 21, and it will again be held in St Oswald’s

Church Hall.

The popular local historian Danny Wells will give a talk entitled “Cheers”.

Two weeks later (Friday, November 4, at 2.30pm) we shall welcome Derby Rock Choir. They were coming to entertain us in March 2020 when the dreaded Covid-19 struck, so in 2022 they are doubly welcome.

They will sing a selection of songs, firm favourites through the ages, many far removed from today’s rock scene

Entry is free, refreshments will be served and everybody is welcome to come along to enjoy the afternoon.
