Warne: Rams didn’t do enough to win

-

PAUL Warne admitted Eiran Cashin’s sending-off proved decisive as Derby County blew a two-goal lead against Torquay United in the FA Cup on Sunday.

The Gulls claimed a firstround replay with the last kick of the game through Will Goodwin, having trailed to two strikes from Will Osula.

But the game changed dramatically in the Gulls’ favour when Cashin saw red for pulling Goodwin back in the box, which saw Asa Hall convert the resulting penalty.

The two sides will now have to do it all again at Pride Park Stadium and head coach Warne admitted the Rams only had themselves to blame.

“Even if we had held out for the last five seconds, I would not have been over the moon with the performance,” said the Rams’ head coach.

“The sending-off killed us because we were comfortable.

“I thought we should have taken more chances in the first half. We over-complicated some chances to cross, we had chances to shoot and didn’t so, that was frustrating.

“At 2-0, maybe arrogantly, we could keep control of the ball and ask more questions but then came the sending off and the penalty.

“We are causing our own problems. We went down to 10 men and in a game like this, it doesn’t matter who you are playing, they are going to throw everything at it.

“The goalkeeper goes up for the last corner, the crowd is right behind them, the wind is behind them and everything seems to be against us. We just didn’t do enough.”

The weather was foul with a strong wind and lashing rain but Warne was not about to use that as an excuse and said Torquay deserved what they got.

“It was ridiculously windy and people were losing their footing all over the pitch but that is what cup football is all about,” he said.

“It is the same for both teams, there are no excuses in that.

“I just didn’t think we did enough in the final third to win the game.

“Torquay fully deserved their draw. After the sending off, they asked enough questions to get a goal and we rode our luck at times.”
