Plain clothes officers’ blitz on shoplifters hailed success
ASHBOURNE police officers were out in plain clothes for a covert blitz on “prolific” shoplifters, to curb a sharp rise in thefts over the festive period.
The operation, which was in response to a string of reports of shoplifting, including quantities of alcohol, was deemed a success after a thief was caught in the act and arrested.
Members of the Ashbourne Safer Neighbourhood Team, which is based in the Park Road station, worked with shopkeepers in the town to coordinate the operation, after hearing of the problems the spate of offences had been causing.
A spokesman for the force said: “Prolific shoplifters had been causing havoc, particularly in the run-up to Christmas and the new year, targeting multiple locations in Derbyshire.
“Their focus was the Ashbourne town shopping centres and retail stores, where they were stealing quantities of alcohol daily.
“Today, our dedicated police officers and Pcsos from Ashbourne SNT team took decisive action by conducting a covert operation in plain clothes to tackle this ongoing issues headon.
“The collaborative efforts with local superstores and retail businesses played a crucial role in the success of today’s operation.
“We are pleased to report that one shoplifter suspect was caught in the act and promptly arrested.
“As of now, the individual is in police custody.
“We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Ashbourne town shopkeepers for their unwavering support and cooperation.
“It is through the unity and collaboration of the community that we can effectively combat crime.
