Key roads set to benefit from more than £3million revamp
KEY roads leading in and out of Tamworth will benefit from more than £3 million worth of funding, it has now been confirmed.
In plans agreed by Staffordshire County Council’s cabinet, the extra investment will see Upper Gungate and Aldergate receive £1,115,000 and Coton Lane £1,665,000, programmed for 2024/25, and Coleshill Street, Fazeley £1,590,000, for 2025/26 and 2026/27.
Reacting, Mercian ward councillor Richard Kingstone said: “I’m delighted we have finally had it confirmed that major works are going to go ahead.
“Residents and myself have been campaigning for five years to see the problem rectified.
“What we really need now is a date to carry out these works as soon as possible. It’s such a shame we are still facing a potential 12 month delay until anything is done with more cars likely to be damaged.
“The developments in the area have led to the lane decaying to this level due to increased traffic levels. It again shows that infrastructure needs improving before developments go ahead.”
Spital and Perrycrofts councillor Rob Pritchard described it as great news and said: “There are two problem roads in my area being rebuilt following my extensive lobbying of Staffordshire County Council.
“Upper Gungate and Aldergate between Lichfield Street and Croft Street will be resurfaced very soon. This is a £1,115,000 project.
“And the final rubber stamp has occurred to add Coton Lane between
Comberford Road and the STW plant to the list. This major structural repair is a £1,665,000 project and will fix the substance issues causing the road to break up.
“Also added to the list is Coleshill Street, inclusive of B5404 Island and approaches, between Watling Street Brook End in Fazeley; A major commuter route. This is a £1,590,000.00 project.
“This is in addition to the extra funding for pothole repairs and top dressing. So please do keep reporting any potholes you see and we will get these sorted.”
Fazeley Cllr Alex Farrell said: “I’m so pleased to see Staffordshire County Council investing over £1.5m into Fazeley to improve Coleshill Street.
“This area is the lifeblood of Fazeley, where our hub of restaurants, takeaways and shops are frequently visited, children are dropped off at Millfield School, and it also links the jewel in our crown - Drayton Manor Resort - with Tamworth town centre.
“I’m sure Fazeley residents will join me in welcoming these improvements to Coleshill Street, and I’m looking forward to work starting very soon.”
In plans agreed by Staffordshire County Council’s cabinet, the extra investment will see 34 road reconstruction schemes planned to be being completed between 2024/25 to 2026/27, with a further nine schemes identified subject to Network North funding including the resurfacing of junctions and roundabouts at key locations in the county, more than 450 preventative carriageway maintenance schemes, totalling 1.5 million square metres in 2024/25, and £2.75 million worth of work to repair highway drainage.
