Town is among England’s ‘smoke-quitting capitals’

TAMWORTH is among England’s ‘smoke-quitting capitals’, according to a new survey.

The study by online vape retailer Vape Globe analysed 2022 data from the Office for National Statistics on the number of ex-smokers in UK local authorities.

Researchers ranked each area based on the highest-to-lowest percentage of its population who are ex-smokers.

Tamworth came in at seventh with 27,278 ex smokers, 34.6 per cent of the population.

A spokesperson for Vape Globe commented on the findings: “This data underscores how it’s important to not only have smoke-quitting programs at a national level but also locally, as people might be more incentivised in following them. Moreover, local authorities can demonstrate that targeted efforts can yield tangible results in reducing smoking rates and improving public health outcomes.

“The notable progress made by these communities serves as a beacon of hope for others, highlighting the potential for effective tobacco control measures to create healthier environments and empower individuals to live smokefree lives.”

Topping the list is Fenland, located in Cambridgeshire, with an estimated population of 42,741 ex-smokers, constituting 41.6 per cent of its total population.

Following closely behind is Hertsmere, situated in Hertfordshire. In third place is Eden, located in Cumbria.

North Devon, in Devon, secures the fourth position on the list.

Rounding out the top five is Havant in Hampshire and Mendip, Somerset sixth.

West Devon, Rother in East Sussex and Dover finish off the top 10 behind Tamworth.
